(FICUS CARICA)

In India fig cultivated in 200 Ha in Pune. Shrirangapatnam(Karnataka)Lucknow(U.P).In A.P. it is grown in Mahabubnagar, Rangareddy Districts.

CLIMATE

Fig is more sensitive to climatic conditions than to soil.Itdoes not like high rain fall or humidity. Climate influences hte quality of the fruit which is best in a warm dry weather. A dry locality with irrigation facilities is good for fig cultivation but temperature above 39oc causes sun burn of the fruit and also damages the trunk of the tree.

SOIL

Fig grows well in a variety of soils, but does not like sandy soils. The fruit quality is good on heavy soils.

PROPAGITION

Hardwood Cuttings

Planting & Season:

Hardwood Cuttings :

Hard wood cuttings should be 2 or 3 years old 1 1/2 to 2 cm think and with short internodes.Planted in December to February. The cuttings are buried deep in soil covering even the top most bud with some soil. The rooted plants are then transplanted in the field after about 14 months.

SPACING

5m X 5m.

PRUNING

Pruning is important in fig.Small trees are ezasy to harvest. The trees are headed back severrely every year leaving about 2 buds on each one year leaving about 2 buds on each one year shoot. Shoots which have borne fruit are lightly headed back after harvesting. In the absence of adequate pruning, the shoot moves away from the trunk every year. This can be remedied by shorting the main branches to a stump in winter.

HARVEST

The fig bears 2 crops a year.It bears from july to September and February to May.The yield/tree around 200-300 fruits.

DISEASES
